Spacious Day 6: Mark the Shift

Today marks a shift. You’ll notice a second Day 6 post with a name change in the title from “Decluttering” to “Spacious”. This isn’t by accident. Read how my day unfolded including in my comments below the post.

Two things are showing up for me as I proceed through this journey:

1. I’m feeling bad about my clutter, as if it means something about me and the way I live my life.

Do you feel that too? Does it stir up negative emotion for you? Or is it just me?

2. I’ve not yet fully plunged into this journey.

Yes, we are already almost a week in. And yes I’m doing my one thing a day. But I’m like the child sitting at the side of the pool wanting to swim but only putting her toe in the water.

So when I awoke at 4:30 am to the quiet of the morning, I knew to listen to the voice of inspiration that said, “Dive in. Give yourself fully to the process.”

I’ve done enough of these 30-day journeys to know that what unfolds as wisdom and insight is never just about the activity we undertake.

The real juice is in the journey of transformation within.

We are to walk toward our resistance instead of away. Let it be our teacher, our guide. Get our arms around it only to realize it’s not the big ugly monster we feared but rather a simple idea that we hold and we can easily decide to dissolve.

So my shift comes by way of a personal commitment to dive into the process and give myself fully to whatever shows up.

It’s to notice resistance and ask what this is about:

  • What do I fear?
  • What do I fear this clutter says about me? And is that true?
  • If I rid myself of the clutter, what do I think will happen?
  • Do I want that outcome? Do I deserve it?

Most importantly, can I consciously shift my focus away from decluttering (which still feels restrictive) to creating space (which feels more open and expansive)?

Words are subtle, but profoundly important, as they trigger different energetic reactions within us. I know this from my communications work. I can write a great speech for an executive but if one word throws him or her off, the whole speech is coloured. Change the word to something more palatable and the speech is golden.

This is not to say you won’t hear me use the word clutter, but the focus will be on the spaciousness we desire. What we focus on, grows.

With all that said, let’s dive in. It’s the weekend tomorrow. And I’m committing to plunging into the year-end books for my business that need to get done.

Take a moment to ask yourself what in your life is weighing on you the most? What’s something you really want to dive into? Something that will bring huge satisfaction when completed? What portion of it can you complete this weekend?

I’d love to hear.

With love and renewed enthusiasm,
Paula

  1. I went away for a few days and lost my momentum – But i’m back at it again! Today I put a huge stack of towels away. Later today I’ll put away all the clean sheets that ended up as a pile in the hallway too!

    • Welcome back Laura! I love that you are following your own rhythm and then coming back to pick up where you left off. That is, there isn’t a right or wrong way to do these journeys. Just whatever works in the flow of your life. I’ve been continuing to chip away at things on my Freedom List. Yesterday I made great progress recording my stock transactions for 2010 in preparation for our tax return. Felt great to catch up on bookkeeping for this. Enjoy this day Laura!
