What this 627 foot Perspective can Teach You about Life

My daughter Hanna sure has taught me to celebrate birthdays. Last week we celebrated her 7th birthday all week — a fancy dinner, a special crepe breakfast, fun gifts and lots of family chats.

On Monday, we went to the top of the Calgary Tower. There’s a revolving restaurant that makes a complete circle in an hour. Over the course of our meal, we had stunning panoramic views of the city, the mountains and could even see our small bedroom community on the horizon.

The picture above is from the glass floor on the observation deck. While my stomach did a belly flop, I was so curious to watch the world 627 ft below – people that looked like tiny specks and a cab no bigger than my big toe.

Just imagine if you could take an elevator up and have a similar view of your life?  What would you see?

You wouldn’t notice the daily bumps on the road that can annoy?

They wouldn’t even be visible.  Nor could you hear the gossip between two people standing on the street corner.  Again, indecipherable at that height.  You’d only see the more significant pieces – the people and the things most important to you.  They’d be represented by the buildings.

And your perspective would be broader.

You could see more of the factors at play.  You would understand why some things happen as they do and why the timing on other things is not yet.  You’d be more at peace knowing there is a Divine plan for your life that you are helping direct it with your intentions and actions.

You’d also see the roadways and bridges and how best to get from A to Z.

You’d know in advance if there was construction and how to navigate around it.  You’d see obstacles in your path or where you are driving the wrong way down a one way street – against the natural flow.

The question is, day to day, what you are focused on?

The big picture or the minuscule road bumps?  Things that matter or things that wouldn’t even hit your radar screen if your perspective was broader?

What things would you stand on the mountain top for and what weapons would you quietly lay down and walk away from?

Would you look at your life in awe?  Or would you see something that looked a little small?

Would you tear down old buildings of fear and build more parks for play?  Would you construct new bridges and roadways that expand possibilities?

Just imagine.

Practically speaking, the way to get perspective in life is to step outside the busy-ness of your life.

We can’t see the broader picture when we are immersed in the day-to-day happenings.  So this next week I invite you to seek perspective.

Climb a hill or mountain and look around.  Take a vacation FROM your life and reflect ON your life.  Spend a few quiet moments in nature or on your back admiring the clouds.  Have a heart to heart with a loved one, not just about the day’s events but what you want out of life.  Think about what ‘buildings’ would stay, what you’d tear down and what you’re excited to build newly.

Then take a deep breath…because you can have the life you image.  It’s waiting for you to say YES.

Keep sparkling!
