What Leaving Your Cell Phone at Home Reveals

Ever leave your cell phone somewhere and feel completely lost without it? Well, yesterday on our way to Hanna’s swimming, I realized twenty minutes from home that I’d forgotten my cell phone.

OMG… PANIC.

You’d have thought I left my one arm at home.  I contemplated turning around since:

1) I had to coordinate meeting my hubby later.
2) I was going to be away for most of the day.

I told Hanna and she had the same nervous reaction.

“What are we going to do? How will we let dad know?”

That’s when I stopped mid-breath and sighed.

What’s happening to us as a society? We are slaves to our cell phones. They’ve become our lifeline to the world, but at a cost.

I’m all about signs, so I knew this had happened for a reason. I informed Hanna that for many years, we didn’t have phones attached to us. We weren’t connected 24/7. If we needed help, we asked. Or we used a pay phone or borrowed someone else’s phone.

“We’ll be fine sweetie, you’ll see.”

And of course we were. People were helpful. Phones appeared in abundance wherever we went. Plans worked out perfectly… as they always do when we surrender to what is.

More interesting was to watch my habits through the day of how many times I went to check my phone — a phone I didn’t have — only 5 minutes later to forget that fact and grab for it again.

CRAZY-NESS!

I watch this hard-wired habit perform at lightning speed — and I wondered how many times this is happening in my day without me being aware.

I noticed some thoughts of worry… what if something happens with my car and I need help? But with each thought, I told myself I am resourceful and could handle it.

As the day progressed, I felt a freedom and a trust — qualities I treasure in my life. Oooo… I kinda like this feeling!

The lesson?  Remember that your cell phone is a tool. You are its master, not the other way around.

Allow yourself the freedom to disconnect from phones and technology. Our spirits need that break from constant checking. And we need to feel the trust of things just working out.

Because they do.

Here’s to freedom on your terms,

Love,

Paula

  1. I came to love those days without my phone. It always feels like a little vacation away from emails or to-do lists. Thank you for the reminder to re-activate one digital-free day per week.
