AM Bliss Day 9: But I’m Not a Morning Person

Recently I’ve heard this response from a few people. “I love your posts, but I’m not a morning person.”

Great feedback! So, here’s my response.

This journey is not about turning you into something you’re not — just the opposite. It’s about discovering your natural rhythm and working with that. Whether you wake up at 6 am or 8 am or 10 am or 2 pm, we all need to wake up at some point.

The question is, how can you shape that routine to best honour you and set you up for an amazing day?

Consider this. A friend of mine wasn’t a morning person. She hated having to make conversation with others first thing in the morning. So for the first hour, she spoke to no one. She got up slowly, made herself some coffee, read the morning paper and then proceeded to shower and get ready while listening to her favourite music. Then after this time to herself, she was ready to greet the world, including her husband. If you would see her throughout the day, you would never guess this outgoing vibrant woman had this silent morning ritual. And yet it makes perfect sense.

For some of us, we first need to see the family off before we can sink into our juicy routine. (That’s how my day unfolded today.) Or maybe your sacred rituals happen when you arrive at work or even on your morning commute (unless of course that interferes with your driving).

Your morning ritual doesn’t need to be all serene and zen-like, and it certainly doesn’t need to make sense to anyone else.

Maybe you need a good laugh first thing. Maybe you crave singing at the top of your lungs in the shower. Maybe you need vigorous exercise. Maybe you want to phone a loved one and share good company. Maybe you want to practice that acceptance speech for the job/award/nomination you dream of. Or maybe you just want to lay in bed for an extra half an hour and visualize your perfect day.

Be willing to be flexible and creative. More important than getting it right, is just beginning.

It’s the commitment and self awareness that are the most important parts. Start somewhere, anywhere — it doesn’t really matter. What matters is that you get conscious that this life you are creating is yours to author — right from your first morning blink.

As you begin any of my journeys, you will find that it’s like removing layers of an onion.

You can vaguely see the next layer but can’t access it until the top layer is removed. But when you do, look out! The juices will flow! And maybe, just maybe, you’ll find out that the belief you hold that you are not a morning person was just a myth after all.

With Love,
Paula

  1. Thank you Paula! You are right – worked late last night and I am sitting in my pj’s drinking coffee and figuring out my day. I guess that is part of my morning routine…

  2. Awesome blog Paula!

As you are already well aware, it is important to not only listen to your inner self but to honour it as well. With respect to one’s morning routine … it is important to check in with self to ascertain what works for you in so far as your morning routine is concerned … then honour that by building that into your day on a regular basis.

Think of your morning routine as the introductory paragraph of the page/pages of your life story that you choose to pen each and every day.

Watching your evolution Paula is so heart-warming!

    Hugs,

  3. Yes, Murray, you’ve nailed it. The morning routine is truly the opening paragraph. We’re setting the scene, and often times, already identifying the characters, particularly our own.

Regarding my evolution, thanks so much! I’m delighted you are privy to both the inside and outside views. This voice inside pipes up to add… “And you ain’t seen nothing yet!” 🙂

Big hugs and a grateful heart,
    Paula
