7 Steps to Deepen Your Trust

I’ve just come back from 10 days at the lake. I spent hours sitting on the dock in quiet contemplation, connecting with Nature. The lake is called Crystal Lake and when I’m there, things become crystal clear. It’s like all the noise in my life fades away.

I also rocked the paddle board! I spent hours paddling around the lake, doing yoga on it and then floating in meditation — letting the wind blow me wherever it wanted. Absolute heaven. Here’s me, middle of the lake, mastering downward dog. Apparently I inspired two other ladies to try it!

Never once did I worry about tipping. Even when strong winds made paddling a challenge, I knew I was safe.

This trust extended beyond the edges of that board. Several times at the lake I had tears streaming down my face in complete gratitude for a deepening trust in my life.

Trusting life is something I teach my clients. Once they have a taste of the magic, they don’t want to live any other way.

So how do you get there? How do you live into a new level of trust?

Today’s article introduces 7 important steps — some things to stop doing, some to start. As you read through, take note of which you want to strengthen in you.

7 Steps to Deepen Trust in Life (and You)

1. Stop Over-scheduling

Ever notice that when you are scheduled to the max, things start to unravel? As much as society praises multi-tasking and productivity, busyness isn’t your friend. In fact, it can keep you from hearing your inner wisdom. You don’t have time to think, dream, nurture yourself and just breathe. Let’s revisit this topic in mid-August as you begin planning your fall schedule for both you and your family.

As you allow space in your life, trust has a welcoming home.

2. Stop Trying to Control Others

Do people need to be a certain way for you to be happy? Are you trying to control or fix others, particularly your family? I’ve discovered there is a velvety fine line between helping people and controlling them. Hanna, my daughter, teaches me this again and again. In my attempt to guide her, there’s an underlying assumption that I know better than her. Sometimes I do, sometimes I don’t. And I’ve learned to be careful, or I can take away her trust in herself.

What if you could let go of the reigns a little and trust people’s path as perfect for them? What if you could empower them to trust themselves more?

3. Embrace Change

One of the reasons we try to control life is because we want to keep things predictable. Predictable = safe (even if we don’t like it). And yet everything in this world is constantly changing. To live into a new level of trust is to embrace change as a necessary part of the process. That means people will change, you will change, relationships with change, career and life paths will change. And all of that is good, in fact, divinely designed.

Sometimes change looks like things are breaking down. They are — only to rebuild more in alignment with your soul. Allow that.

4. Build a Sacred Morning Routine

How you start your day dictates how your day unfolds. On days I wake up and rush right into activity without my sacred morning routine, I’m scattered, irritable and less productive. On days I honour my routine, I’m centred, joy-filled and flowing in both productivity and synchronicity. Your morning routine is your chance to strengthen your connection to the Divine. Trust grows from that connection.

Your routine doesn’t needs to be complex or time consuming — just something that feeds your body, mind and soul.  Even 20 minutes can transform your world.

5. Connect to Your Passions

Trust comes as we honour our divine gifts — our passions. Whether it’s reading, creating art, walking in Nature, taking pictures, singing, dancing, or something else, when you connect with your divine gifts, you activate the energy of trust.

HINT: Being good at your passion is NOT a prerequisite (unless you are creating a business around it). In fact, the purpose of your passion is to explore your edges.

6. Ask More Questions

Trust, by definition, means you don’t have all the answers. You are invited to ask more questions, explore possibilities and let the answers come — knowing they will.

If you are struggling with something right now, ask this question:

“How could this problem resolve and turn into an opportunity for my Highest Good? What would it look like to trust more?”

7. Practice Receiving in Gratitude

To trust is to let life in and receive the gifts coming your way. As you do, you invite in more. Some come in beautiful packages, others as life lessons you’d rather not repeat. All of them are perfect when you see the divine intelligence built into them. As you receive, do so with complete gratitude.

I teach my clients to open to receiving and many of them play a daily receiving game with me. Time and time again, they discover how rich their lives really are.

Which of the above 7 steps do you need to strengthen? Do you have other steps you practise?
